Reefscapers is a marine consultancy that develops marine biology programmes for resorts through coral reef restoration, sea turtles rehabilitation, ornamental aquaculture and coastal protection. Reefscapers Programme Targeted primarily at resorts in the Maldives to improve the aesthetics around guest amenities or to create snorkelling reefs close to the shore, the method’s field of application is promised to widen in the future and represent a credible proactive adaptation to the present climate scenario. Following our initial successes, Reefscapers coral propagation projects now rank as some of the most successful in the world. To date, we have transplanted more than 5000 coral frames (covering 4 hectares) using over 40 species of corals. The ecological benefits derived from the implementation of these new reefs are patent. Acting as refuge areas for animal post-larvae and source of spawn for the coral species propagated, they contribute to the overall diversity and increase the productivity of a reef flat. In addition, Reefscapers is committed to the local communities and maintains island based jobs, the most viable alternative to fishing or city lights. What do we offer? Reefscapers offers the most advanced coral propagation programme in terms of long term monitoring and maintenance. During the entire process, all the coral frames are bi-annually monitored with pictures taken and uploaded on your personal website, all the data are recorded in an online database visible by the sponsors at any time, this will include name and number of the frame, name of coral species, Google Earth map showing the exact location of the frame (very useful for return guests). See below example of our 3 most popular shapes of coral frames growing over 4 years. Sea Turtles Rehabilitation Programme The Olive Ridley turtle, the smallest species of sea turtle, spends much of its time foraging in the open ocean, making it vulnerable to capture as bycatch, ingestion of marine debris, and entanglement in discarded fishing lines and nets. Known as “ghost nets”, these can float and aggregate in the currents, making their way across oceans. Turtles view the nets as shelter or a place to find food but may become irreversibly entangled in the mesh leading to lacerations, amputations, dehydration, and even drowning if they cannot reach the surface to breathe. To ensure that these turtles have a future in Maldivian waters, we care for sick and injured turtles at our Landaa Giraavaru Rehabilitation Centre. Most of the turtles treated at our centre are Olive Ridley turtles that have been entangled in ghost nets. Since nets are not used in the fishing industry here in the Maldives, they are thought to have drifted on the oceanic currents from India and Sri Lanka.
